Mark and Becky Leighton

Q: How long have you been in this specific mission field?

A: We have been in Thailand since 1985 (26 years).

Q: How long do you plan to serve your present location?

A: I hope we can serve until we are 67, another 7 years.

Q: What other fields/ministry have you served and for how long?

A: We have only served in Thailand.

Q: Describe in a short paragraph the specific mission work you do. Tell us about the people to whom you minister.

A: Currently we are OMF International Field Directors for Thailand. We oversea the work of OMF in Thailand. We have over 150 missionary workers and a significant interface with Thai leadership. Our aim is the reach the majority people the Thai. These people are Buddhists but this is not a pure theoretical Buddhism but a mix of practices, beliefs and rituals.

Q: What are the goals for your ministry in the upcoming year?

A: Our overall goal is to see all Thai people have a church in their community. In order to do this we are seeking to establish churches that reproduce. We want all of our missionaries to be doing something that contributes to these goals. So some of our missionaries help new missionaries learn Thai language and culture because this makes new missionaries effective in evangelism and disciple making. Some of our missionaries are directly starting churches but others are working with existing churches to help them reproduce. So in 2012 we want to continue to develop training for Thai Christians who want to do church planting. We also want to help our missionaries to be effective in ministry (this involves member care, formal and informal mentoring and development, giving counsel and advice, problem solving, guidance, encouragement and leadership). We also want to be involved in mobilization of new missionaries for work in Thailand.

Q: In what ways, other than financial, can The U partner with you?

A: Beside continuing to support us and continuing to support our co-workers, Will and Meng En Brooks, it would be great if you could help us publish a book on church planting in Thai. This project needs about $3000 for the translating and printing of a book on Reproducible Churches. A book like this would be a great help in our efforts to train Thai Christians. Some need vision to see what they could do. Others need to understand the steps to effective church planting. Almost all need encouragement and mentoring as they try to establish new churches. The book we are translating is very helpful for all of these needs.
