Costa Rica Day 3

Day 3 saw our team split up. Half of us continued the physical work at the 3 worksites here in Carrillos, and the other half went to Los Guido. I had the pleasure of going to Los Guido today. Los Guido is an inner city neighborhood about an hour and a half away from where we are staying. There is a methodist church there that Strong Missions partners with to feed children. There are 13 "districts" in Los Guido, each of which is about 1 square block and each of which has about one thousand children living it. Most live with many other siblings in one room homes with dirt floors. We had an opportunity to provide a meal for them which, for most, is the only meal they would eat that day. The neighborhood is VERY poor and controlled by gangs. A few years ago Strong Missions along with the pastor of the church met with the gang leaders to explain to them the feeding program they wanted to start. The gang leaders welcomed it with open arms because Strong Missions feeds their children too. So they know what goes on at the church and the gangs actually do what they can to ensure it continues. No groups are ever troubled or messed with while there. When we arrived we were secured into the church behind a gate and welcomed by 50 children. We served them lunch, moved into their sanctuary, and sang songs and danced with them, made crafts with them, sang "La Montana", played tag and duck, duck, goose, and allowed them to have fun. When the rain started the kids all went home, but it was close to time for us to leave anyway. While there I had an opportunity to practice my spanish (which by the way I am pretty good at, not to toot my own horn or anything) with the pastor of the church. His name is Eugene and he and I talked for about an hour. I asked him to speak slowly and our translator was only needed a couple of times. He shared with me that he has been at that church for a year and a half. When he took it over it had 15 people coming and now has 200 people coming. He says this is only because of the grace of God. It did not have electricity, water, or telephone when he arrived. It now does but his congregation struggles every month to pay the utility bills which comes to about $140.00 every month. Feeling moved by the Lord our group decided to share this with the other half of our team this evening during our devotional time. With the blessing of Strong Missions, we decided to take up an offering in an attempt to pay their bill for a month. Our students and adults put together $210.00 for the Methodist church in Los Guido. I prayed over the pastor before we left and we were on our way. The other half of the team worked their tails off laying concrete, removing old concrete, putting up walls for a house, digging a septic tank, and more. They were greeted with ice cream that we had bought at the grocery store "Mega Super" on the way back from Los Guido. This evening we ate and went and had some salsa dancing lessons. Kayla Messamore is a very good salsa dancer. Tomorrow the other half of our team will go to Los Guido to serve the children while the half that went today will go back to the hard labor. Please continue your prayers for safety and the Lord's guidance. Until next time... Clay
